Bishkek, 24 June 2025. The Kyrgyz Republic has completed the reconstruction of a 67-km section of the Bishkek–Osh road between Madaniyat and Jalal-Abad. This highway is a vital transport artery linking the country’s northern and southern regions and plays a pivotal role in its economic development.

The project was implemented by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic with financial support from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD, the Fund).

The reconstruction of this section marks a major milestone in a large-scale programme to modernise the country’s main transport corridor.

The project involved a full upgrade of the roadway using highly durable asphalt concrete and the introduction of enhanced safety measures, including improved road markings, lighting, pedestrian crossings and other solutions to reduce the risk of accidents. Additional improvements included the installation of drainage systems, barriers and road signs.

“For the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development, participation in infrastructure projects means contributing to sustainable development and improved living standards in the member states,” said Artur Arakelyan, Head of Transport and Communications at the EFSD. “This project has doubled the capacity of this road section.” According to him, the project has reconstructed and restored more than 72 km of asphalt concrete road surface, installed over 20 km of lighting, built more than 45 km of pavements in towns and villages, and planted over 36,000 trees and shrubs.

“The reconstruction of this section of the Bishkek–Osh road is a strategic step that will significantly enhance the country’s transport infrastructure. This route is a vital corridor for economic activity and the social development of the regions, providing a reliable and safe connection between the northern and southern parts of the Kyrgyz Republic,” added Beknazar Bazaraliev, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The road connects remote settlements with major urban centres, which is particularly important for timely access to medical care and the delivery of medicines, as well as for the development of social infrastructure.

The project was financed through a US $60 million investment loan from the EFSD.

The Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) is a regional financing arrangement totalling over US $9 billion, established in 2009 by the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan.  The EFSD aims to promote economic and financial stability in its member states and support their sustainable development.
